Whether you’re travelling by sea or by road, Sveio is located strategically midway between Bergen and Haugesund. The main coast road (E39) runs through the municipality, while shipping routes use the sea area of Sletta, passing Ryvarden Lighthouse and through Bømlofjorden Fjord.
The landscape in Sveio varies from open sea to naked rock, to heather moorland and small mountains, to productive agricultural lands and forests. Here, you will find the perfect conditions for an active holiday if you like golf, paddling, cycling, hiking, or fishing. Canoes and bicycles can be rented.
Ryvarden Lighthouse Cultural Centre is situated on a headland out towards the sea area known as Sletta and is well worth a visit at any time of the year. After a 2-km long walk in the open coastal landscape you can view art in the gallery and enjoy something good in the café. Here, you can experience the power of nature at close hand, with many people choosing to visit in very squally weather.
A series of marked tracks awaits those who want to explore other parts of the Sveio landscape. The views are wideranging even if the summits are not so high. At 432 metres above sea level, Sveio’s highest mountain is Trollvassnipen at Valevåg. From the summit on a clear day, one can almost see to Bergen in the north and to Stavanger in the south.
Also here, the distance between experiences in nature to cultural experiences is short. In Valevåg you are in the landscape of composer Fartein Valen, where you can tread in his footsteps. His house is preserved as a museum and is well worth visiting. Valestrand Heritage Church is open during the summer and in addition to church services, is used for arrangements such as concerts, lectures, and exhibitions.
