The Island of Røvær
The small community of Røvær is situated close to Haugesund. Taking a trip to Røvær is going back in history – to where the Vikings and the fishermen used to rest at bay.
Today Røvær has only 110 inhabitants and one car. But once, this was an island attracting Vikings and fishermen at large.
Vikings and fishermen
People have been living on the small island of Røvær ever since the Viking age. Later, when fishing for herring reached its peak in the 19th Century, there could be as many as 20 000 fishermen on the island. That is probably due to the many quiet, isolated small bays and excellent fishing spots on the island.
A safe harbour
It is safe to walk the island. There are no snakes, mice or rats. With only one car on the island, there is no traffic either. Some say living there is an everyday experience. The inhabitants are used to help one another. The coastal nature is wild and the birdlife is varied. And along the coast lies many excellent spots for fishing or simply relaxing.
Jazz at the church
During the annual jazz festival in Haugesund, Sildajazzen, one of the jazz concerts take place in the church at Røvær. This is a highly popular event, attracting visitors by boats and the local ferry. Known as “Komlejazz”, many visitors stop by at Røvær Sjøhus for the Norwegian traditional dish of potato dumlings before the concert.
